Key Legislation- Repeal of the Combination Acts and Introduction of the Conspiracy Laws (1824)

The Combination Acts were initially put in place by William Pitt in order to prevent the working class from organising demonstrations or going on strike because of their poor wages. They were very harsh on the working class and prevented them from having a voice. Below is some information about the journey to get them repealed.
  • In 1824 Place gave evidence to the press expressing negative views of it and suggesting they had many issues
  • 1824 saw an expansion in the trade industry which suggested there was no longer a need for the Combination Acts
  • In 1825, the legislation to repeal the Combination Acts was complete- some argue this took too long
  • The Conspiracy Laws were passed in place of them
  • Shortly after this was passed, there were several outbreaks of violence in protest
  • The Conspiracy Laws prevented people from meeting in groups consisting of workers and masters, and also of workers and workers
  • They were passed in fear of an uprising and made it easier keep track of people
  • They deterred people from successfully organising an uprising as they could not meet with others
